John R. Gilbert, Chair-Elect
John Gilbert is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he directed the Combinatorial Scientific Computing Laboratory from 2002 through 2022. He is also an adjunct researcher at the IDA Center for Computing Sciences and a Faculty Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. John has done fundamental work in algorithms and software for combinatorial and numerical problems and for sparse matrix computation, including Matlab’s original sparse matrix capabilities, the SuperLU solver library, and the GraphBLAS. His current research applies linear algebraic and graph-theoretic methods to large-scale computational problems.
John received his PhD from Stanford in 1981. He has been a member of the Computer Science faculty at Cornell, a visiting faculty member at MIT, and a Principal Scientist at Xerox PARC. He has chaired the ACM Special Interest Group on Numerical Mathematics and the SIAM Activity Group on Supercomputing, and is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
John currently serves on the Board of the UCSB Emeriti Association and as Chair of the UCSB Emeriti Welfare Committee. He also serves on the Board of the systemwide Council of UC Emeriti Associations, as Chair-Elect of CUCEA.
